Loving You (1957)STORYLINE:Deke Rivers (Elvis Presley) is a nice country boy who grew up an orphan, and wants to find a place in which he belongs. A traveling band is performing in his small town and Deke is persuaded to come onto stage and perform. After watching his performance and his effect on the female audience the somewhat shady lady manager (Lizabeth Scott) of the troupe offers him a job singing with the band. Deke is more interested in staying in his little town where he has friends and a job working on cars. The lady manager makes a call to his boss and the result is that Deke is fired, and he accepts the job with the band. Deke develops feelings for the manager and the girl singer in the band (Dolores Hart). He experiences fame, the good and bad that fame brings his way, on his search to belong. The story is somewhat autobiographical with similarities to Elvis' real life. CAST:Elvis Presley (Deke Rivers/Jimmy Tompkins); Wendell Corey (Walter/Tex Warner); Lizabeth Scott (Manager: Glenda Markle); Dolores Hart (Susan Jessup), James Gleason (Carl Meade). COMMENTS:This movie is a rare look into the early rock n' roll Elvis Presley - the movie and music icon of the 1950's. We get to see what all the fuss was about with this young singer /actor who the teens of the fifties were excited about. We see the raw young Elvis perform - with those jerky, twitchy, uncontrollable hip, body and leg movements. The songs in this movie are some of the best - a movie to be excited about again by longtime Elvis Presley fans and a new generation of fans too. |
