Barbara Stanwyck (1907-1990)

Biography / Bio:

Birthplace: Brooklyn, New York.
Birthname: Ruby Stevens.

At the age of 3 Ruby is orphaned - her mother is killed in an accident and her father leaves. Ruby is brought up in foster homes and raised by her sister Mildred.
Her sister is a showgirl and takes Ruby from time to time with her on jobs. Ruby becomes very good at memorizing her sister's dance routines. One of Mildred's professional dancer associates, James Buck Mack, has a big influence on encouraging Ruby into show business.
She gets a part in the Ziegfeld Follies 1922 at the age of 16. Ruby begins her dancing in the back row of the chorus - she also is dancing at night clubs, restaurants, and as a dance instructor at a Speak Easy. Ruby then gets a part in the Broadway show The Noose. The producer gives her a scene and a new name, Barbara Stanwyck. Her next role is in burlesque. She is introduced to Frank Fay – an established star in vaudeville. Fay and Stanwyck marry. Fay helps Stanwyck break into the business. Barbara Stanwyck gets her first talkie, The Locked Door. Next comes a screen test with Frank Capra, who likes what he sees and casts her in her first successful part in the movie Ladies of Leisure (1930).
